Seneca County Station 16
Waterloo Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., situated midway between Rochester and Syracuse in New York’s scenic Finger Lakes Region, spans the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. Waterloo itself, with approximately 5,000 residents, extends its protective reach to nearly 7,500 when including adjacent areas.
Established in 1830 by an act of the New York State Legislature, we proudly hold the distinction of being one of the state’s oldest incorporated volunteer fire departments. Originally comprising multiple engine companies, our organization consolidated in 1921 into the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., operating initially from multiple small stations before consolidating to our current single location in 1991.
Under the authority of the Village of Waterloo Board of Trustees, we function as a municipal department integrated within the village government. Our membership elects officers, with final approval from the Village Board. Our leadership structure includes Line Officers, such as the Chief and Assistant Chiefs, and Corporation Officers, including the President and Board of Directors.
Funding primarily derives from village property taxes and town contracts for fire protection services, supplemented by ongoing community fundraising efforts and federal grants. These resources have enabled us to acquire essential equipment and enhance our operational capabilities significantly.
Annually, we respond to approximately 320 calls, encompassing a variety of emergencies from fires to hazardous material incidents. Our firefighters undergo rigorous training, including New York State Fire Fighter Level 1 certification and specialized courses like Hazardous Materials Technician and Vehicle Extrication Technician. Many of our members also pursue advanced training at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls.
Our fleet includes essential apparatuses such as Class A Engines, a Heavy Rescue equipped with vehicle extrication tools and a specialized FAST/RIT team, Tanker, Brush Truck tailored for grass fires, and a versatile Squad Van. Each vehicle is strategically equipped to handle specific emergency scenarios efficiently.
Waterloo Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. remains committed to safeguarding our community, supported by dedicated volunteers and robust resources to ensure swift and effective emergency response.
